The South-East Wales Science Shops Network (SEWSSN) Masters Scholarship in Communicating Science - 2007-8
Two scholarships are available to support students undertaking the University of Glamorgan’s MSc Communicating Science on a full time basis in the academic year 2007-2008. Each scholarship will fund the full tuition fees of the course, plus provide an additional contribution towards the cost of textbooks and other course materials. The combined fees and allowance will total no more than £4000.
The Science Shops movement is an international network of research centres which share the common aim of providing their local communities and non-governmental organisations with scientific research support at low or no cost. Science Shops work from a very broad definition of the term ‘science’, undertaking projects in almost any area that requires systematic research expertise - from nature and the environment to social issues and areas such as history or law. The actual research will be undertaken through collaborations between dedicated Science Shop researchers, University students and academics, and members of community groups who will be provided with appropriate training, equipment and support. By encouraging community organisations to identify and meet their own research needs, Science Shops aim to be genuinely responsive to, and helpful with, the problems experienced by the citizens of south-east Wales. By opening up the resources of higher education to the communities which sustain them, Science Shop projects also aim to enable University students and staff to strengthen their links with the community while developing research with real local relevance.
Recipients of the scholarships will be expected to undertake a dissertation project directly related to the activities of the Science Shop. Applicants should therefore have an established interest in this type of research, and be willing and able to make a positive contribution towards the goals of the South East Wales Science Shop Network.
Applicants for the scholarships will need to complete the scholarship application form and, if shortlisted, attend an interview to assess their suitability, based on the criteria listed below. Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Successful candidates will:
• Possess a minimum of an upper second class honours degree in
a relevant discipline. A degree in a science subject is not necessary,
but applicants without a science qualification will be asked to provide
evidence of an interest in and commitment towards science communication.
• Be able to demonstrate previous experience of science communication
activity. This may have been gained as part of an undergraduate course,
as voluntary work or whilst in employment.
• Have the potential to engage in original research that contributes
to the work of the South East Wales Science Shop Network.
• Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Be able to work independently
The following conditions must also be met:
• All applicants must apply for and be accepted onto the MSc Communicating
Science and complete the separate scholarship application form.
• To be considered for the scholarship applicants must have an equivalent
qualification to an upper second honours degrees. Equivalence will be
determined by the Faculty whose decision is final, and no correspondence
will be entered into.
• Only new students enrolling onto the MSc Communicating Science
on a full time basis qualify for the scholarship.
• In the event of any scholarship holder being a debtor to the University,
these grants will not be paid until the debt is cleared.
• These scholarships are not available in addition to or in conjunction
to other bursaries or scholarships (except the Widening Participation
Bursary).
• Only home and EU students will be eligible to apply.
