WORK WITH US: Community Groups
Make a Difference!

'My community group needs help researching a problem. What should we do?'
The first step is to contact us. We'll meet with your group to discuss the problem you need help with researching. We may be able to assign a student researcher to assist you or we may suggest other organisations that can help.

Who can apply for help?
Any community group can approach Science Shops for help. Examples of groups helped include:

  • Community/voluntary groups
  • Environmental NGOs
  • Local/regional authorities
  • Schools/pupils
  • Patient groups
  • Labour unions
  • Religious groups
  • SMEs
  • Individuals (conditions apply)

What sort of work have Science Shops been involved with?
Science Shops work from a very broad definition of the term ‘science’, undertaking projects in almost any area that requires systematic research expertise - from nature and the environment to social issues and areas such as history or law.
Here are some examples of projects from science shops, national and international:

  • Using alternative/sustainable energy to supplement electricity usage at a community centre, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales
  • Investigating levels of contamination on allotments , Cefnpennar, South Wales
  • Addressing social isolation among elderly men, Belfast
  • Evaluating whether singing lessons help the development of speech and language skills in children with Down's Syndrome, Belfast
  • The recycling of old computers, Berlin
  • Adapting local environmental plans to the needs of city dwellers, Seville
  • Identifying support needs for single mothers studying at universities, Vienna

Y cam cyntaf yw cysylltu â ni. Fe wnawn ni gwrdd â’ch grŵp i drafod y broblem mae angen arnoch i’w hymchwilio. Efallai byddwn yn gallu penodi myfyriwr fel ymchwilydd i’ch helpu neu gallem awgrymu cyrff eraill fedrai eich helpu.

Pwy fedr gynnig am help?
Gall unrhyw grŵp cymunedol ddod at Siopau Gwyddoniaeth am help. Enghreifftiau o grwpiau a dderbyniodd help yw:

  • Grwpiau cymunedol/gwirfoddol
  • Cyrff anllywodraethol amgylcheddol
  • Awdurdodau lleol/rhanbarthol
  • Ysgolion/disgyblion
  • Grwpiau cleifion
  • Undebau llafur
  • Grwpiau crefyddol
  • BBaChau
  • Unigolion (dan amodau arbennig)

Pa fath o waith mae Siopau Gwyddoniaeth wedi ymgymryd ag ef?
Mae Siopau Gwyddoniaeth yn gweithio ar sail diffiniad eang iawn o’r term ‘gwyddoniaeth’, gan ymgymryd â phrosiectau mewn bron unrhyw faes sydd angen arbenigedd ymchwil trefnus – o natur a’r amgylchedd i faterion cymdeithasol megis hanes neu’r gyfraith.

Dyma rai enghreifftiau o brosiectau gan siopau gwyddoniaeth, yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol:

  • Defnyddio ynni amgen/cynaliadwy i ychwanegu at ddefnydd trydan mewn canolfan gymunedol ym Merthyr Tudful
  • Ymchwilio i lefelau llygredd ar randiroedd yng Nghefnpennar
  • Trin ynysu cymdeithasol ymhlith dynion hŷn, Belfast
  • Asesu a ydy gwersi canu yn gallu helpu datblygiad sgiliau iaith a lleferydd mewn plant â syndrom Down’s, Belfast
  • Ailgylchu hen gyfrifiaduron, Berlin
  • Addasu cynlluniau amgylcheddol lleol at anghenion trigolion yn y ddinas, Seville
  • Adnabod anghenion cynnal ar gyfer mamau sengl sydd yn astudio mewn prifysgolion, Vienna
