October 26-27 2009
Science Shops Wales recently took part in The National Trust’s ‘Wild Child’ campaign, which seeks to encourage children to get their hands dirty and get back in touch with nature. The theme for the Anglesey event was “Foods of the Sea”, and Science Shops Wales led workshops on smoothie-making and wind-socks. Some children made their own smoothie recipes up at the workshop – these are available here.

Coping with Communicating The Earth System Crisis - a personal development day for Science Shops Wales staff and Associates
SSW recently hosted a personal development day for staff and associates focusing on Coping with Communicating the Earth System Crisis. The day acknowledged that facing disturbing information about our world situation is emotionally challenging, the issues, and the feelings they bring up, can be difficult to talk about, they can leave us feeling overwhelmed, low, anxious and helpless. Yet, demonstrated that when we support each other in facing difficult things, we find we are not alone and we can draw strength from that there are insights, processes and strategies that strengthen our ability and inspiration to respond.
The day was facilitated by Sue Weaver and Chris Johnstone and was useful and productive for all who attended.

Science Shops Wales delivers vital Community Climate Change events in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government
Community Action for Climate Change Network events take place in Llangollen, Aberystwyth & Cardiff.
 |
The Welsh Assembly Government, in collaboration with Science Shops Wales and supported by key partners, recently facilitated a number of regional networks for anyone contributing to efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in Wales.
Three free events took place across Wales during May - Llangollen (May 6th) Aberystwyth (May 19th) and Cardiff (May 20th) winning significant approval from those attending.
The events were both successful and constructive, featuring reputable and cutting edge speakers such as Rachel Nunn of Going Carbon Neutral Sterling, Ken Peattie of BRASS, Steve Harris of Science Shops Wales and Andy Middleton of The TYF Group. Delivering and honest portrayal of the urgency of the threat of climate change, the events also offered positive examples of community-based solutions to those threats.
As well as the motivating range of speakers, the events also featured a series of informal learning spaces, run by a range of formal partners in the delivery of climate change actions, such as Cynnal Cymru, Environment Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government. The spaces intended to make the resources of these formal organisations accessible, giving attendees the opportunity to get direct answers and ideas on overcoming the obstacles and barriers facing them in their vital work.
Speakers' Presentations and speeches are available here.

Community Climate Ex-change
Science Shops Wales supported the Welsh Assembly Government’s Community Climate Ex-change event, which was organised by Sustainable Wales on January 30th. The event was successful in its aim to inspire and help community and voluntary
organisations outside the green and sustainable development sectors to help tackle climate change.
Science Shops Wales' Dr Steve Harris took part in a Question Time-style session at the close of the event which appealed to the community sector to take urgent action to
combat climate change, inspiring others in turn to also play their part in slowing the
effects of climate change. A display of our Climate Change Information Boards and literature was also available at the event.
